Surprise Concert

Yesterday I had the good fortune to stumble across Chatham County Line playing an informal, acoustic 30 minute set at Sadlack's.

It was a wonderful, summer surprise.

So Awesome I Almost Peed My Pants

Sorry to be so heavy on posting today, but this can't wait. In response to my Poker Face post reader Katie commented with this:

It's a rediculously awesome Poker Face parody about typefaces. Anyone of the design persuasion will get a good laugh. Best lyric:

"You'll read my, you'll read my, you can read my Neutra Face. Even if it's bold italic."

Thanks Katie - you totally made my day!

Pa-Pa-Pa-Poker Face Pa-Pa-Poker Face

What I am about to show you is completely different than the concrete clock, but equally as bad ass. Just in a very different way.

May I present to you Johnny Weir performing to Poker Face.

I don't know if this is considered figure skating or ice dancing, but I don't care. I love it. Lady Gaga + pleather + ice skates + Johnny Weir's signature sauciness* = all kinds of AWESOME!

WARNING: once you watch this, you may be compelled to sing Lady Gaga all. day. long.

*I don't want to make any assumptions about his orientation, but let's just call him festive and leave it at that.

Listening: Do You Want To Know A Secret?

It's no secret that I love the Beatles, but I have had this particular song on my mind for the past few days. Because it's an older recording there is no official music video*, so look past the blurry photo slideshow and enjoy the music. Happy Friday!

*I could have posted this instead, but I didn't want to subject you to that much wierdness. Even I don't love the Beatles enough to sit through that.

Watching: Thriller

Recently the hubby and I went to Southpoint for dinner. While we were outside waiting for our table a stage lit up and we heard the beginning of Thriller. Moments later dancers* dressed as zombies made their way to the stage and started doing the Thriller Dance. The crowd was in awe as a kid danced his way through MJ's famous moves. Then as suddenly as it started, the number was over and the zombies, er dancers, dispersed.

My question is, how many times do you have to practice before you can do Thriller with a straight face?

*The emcee announced they were from some triangle area dance troupe, but I don't remember their name. If anyone knows, please tell me so I can give them credit!

Listening: I and Love and You

IT'S HERE! After weeks and weeks of waiting, my 'I and Love and You' deluxe edition* is finally in my hands! As I un-wrapped everything I took some quick photos to share with you guys.

The set is presented in a black canvas box, the size of a record sleeve. Here are details of the cover lettering and the record label.

As I open the case you can see the 2 CDs on the left and the packet of art on the right. The packet contained over 30 prints of original drawings,** photos and song lyrics. Tucked in the back is a bandana featuring the pattern from the inside cover.

Last, but certainly not least, I received an autographed print of the album cover art. I still can't believe I have this in my posession! This bad boy is definitely getting framed ASAP.

After my quick photo shoot (which earned me several strange looks from the hubby) I carefully boxed everything back up so I can prominently display it on my bookshelf.

Eventually I will frame some of the photos and drawings; when I do, I will show them off to you guys!

*The box set is no longer available, but you can buy the CD here.
**I am assuming the drawings were done by
Scott.

Watching: I And Love And You [a music video]

With only 5 days to go before their new album is released, the Avett Brothers have been making videos and clips to share with their fans. Today's offering* is a full-length music video for the title track 'I And Love And You.'
The video tells the story of the band packing up and saying their good-byes as they leave for a New York show. You see moments that are mundane yet touching: the brothers stacking hay bales, Seth cuddling his cat, Scott writing his wife a love note. I don't know who directed it but the visuals are as good as the music. It feels as if you are watching old home movies. Just like their music, it feels intimate and instantly familiar.
* Get it? You know, Offering? Only their best song ever!

Listening: Avett Brothers' New Album

Oh my goodness! I can barely contain my excitement! I just pre-ordered my copy of the Avett Brothers new Album "I and Love and You" and since I'm such a huge, huge fan I ordered the "Deluxe Box, which is a pre-sale exclusive." I will recieve:
- the Vinyl LP
- full mp3 download of the album
- 2 CDs – the full album PLUS a 6-song disc of demos, exclusive to the deluxe box
- 31 high quality art prints by Scott and Seth, prints by Crackerfarm, song lyrics
- tear-drop bandanna with art by Scott
BONUS: the first 1,000 people who order the deluxe box will receive a signed print of the album cover painting!

I have no way of knowing if I am in the first 1,000 or not, but considering I ordered it as soon as I got the e-mail I have to assume I am. But who knows? The album isn't released until September 29 so now I just have to be a good girl and wait.

Listening: Jenny Lewis

Last night I saw the sold-out performance of Jenny Lewis at the Cat's Cradle. The venue is standing room only but luckily I got there early so I was only 2 rows back. The opener was Deer Tick (bottom right) and Jenny was backed by Farmer Dave (bottom left). She put on, quite possibly, the best live show I have ever seen. She engaged the crowd, danced a bit and sang effortlessly - such a big voice coming from such a tiny person. She sang some Rilo Kiley songs as well as a few tunes from her album with the Watson Twins. Added bonus: the folks at Cat's Cradle (and Jenny) are good sports about photography during the show, so I managed to get a few shots.

Listening: Avett Brothers Concert

Last week I, along with several friends, went to Greensboro to see the Avett Brothers. Not only are they my favorite band, but they also happen to be the namesake of my blog. Since the concert was on Halloween the band dressed up as different military officers. Most women love a man in uniform, but when that man is also an Avett, that's almost too much to handle! haha

I took this picture with my new camera. I apologize for the blurriness - I am still trying to figure out the settings.
